Vegan Survival Guide for Coronavirus Quarantine

What a strange couple of weeks! Events are being canceled left and right, offices are shutting down, toilet paper is flying off the shelves, and most people are social distancing.

For those who now find themselves at home during the day, unable to go to work, go to the movies, or go out with friends - hang in there! Now might be a good time to catch up on all things vegan.

Watch a documentary. As a vegan activist, it never hurts to have a few facts up your sleeve, and documentaries are a great way to learn. Here are some documentaries you can find for free online or on Netflix. Note that some of these may not be considered family friendly.

  • The Animal People (Netflix – featuring our own Daniel Lysk!)

  • Cowspiracy (Netflix)

  • Dominion (https://www.dominionmovement.com/watch)

  • Earthlings (http://www.nationearth.com/)

  • Forks over Knives (Netflix)

  • Game Changers (Netflix)

  • What the Health (Netflix)

Listen to a podcast. There are so many wonderful vegan podcasts out there that can refresh your spirit and keep you informed. All of the following are available for free through iTunes.

  • Chickpeeps Podcast

  • Disclosure Podcast (Earthling Ed)

  • Food for Thought

  • Main Street Vegan

  • Nutrition Facts with Dr. Greger

  • Plant-Powered People

  • Plant Proof

Read a book. I'm a firm believer that we should never stop learning, especially when it comes to veganism and activism. Check your library app for the following books or order them off Amazon.

Animalkind (Ingrid Newkirk)

Eating Animals (Jonathan Safran Foer)

Gristle: From Factory Farms to Food Safety (Moby/Miyun Park)

How Not to Die/How Not to Diet (Dr. Michael Greger)

Joyful Vegan (Colleen Patrick-Goudreau)

Mercy for Animals (Gene Stone/Nathan Runkle)

Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows (Melanie Joy)

Try a new recipe. All the toilet paper might be gone, but the vegan section of the store is going strong. Always wanted to cook more diverse vegan dishes but never had the time? Give some of these a try!

Eat out...while staying in. It's more important than ever to support our local vegan restaurants. While most of them are no longer offering dine-in, fear not! Delivery and pick-up are always options. Be sure to check their Facebook pages or Instagrams for updates, and always call to make sure hours and procedures haven’t changed.

Take care of yourself. Vegans get sick too! Don't neglect your vitamins, especially D and B12. Reach out to friends if you're feeling the cabin fever. Go outside. Or, if it's raining, have an indoor dance party. Get creative with some arts and crafts. And, I'm sure you're sick of hearing it, but wash your hands!
